During the late 1600s it became a prominent seaport. Today, Port Tobacco is home to several historical sites including the historic St. Ignatius Church, one of the oldest Catholic parishes in the country. Built in 1798, the church was restored in 1868 and now provides the usual church services, as well as a wide range of philanthropic and service-oriented programs. Also located in Port Tobacco is the Thomas Stone National Historic Site, a plantation that was once home to one of the four signers of the Declaration of independence. Visitors can view the beautifully restored manor house. Other Sites to visit include the reconstructed Port Tobacco Courthouse that is furnished as a 19th Century courtroom and has exhibits on tobacco and archeological finds. Catslide House, one of the four surviving 18th Century homes in the area and the restored One-Room Schoolhouse can also be seen.
